To turn on the computer, press the power button on the front of the computer box ONE TIME. WAIT. It takes some minutes for it to get everything working.
To turn off the computer, NEVER PRESS THE POWER BUTTON. Do go to bottom left corner and click on START. Then click on little red square TURN OFF COMPUTER. Then you will see a little window with 3 options--yellow box with STAND BY, red box with TURN OFF, green box with RESTART. Click on red TURN OFF. (Never hit Stand by--only hit Restart if the computer tells you to.) WAIT--it takes minutes to turn everything off safely.
Some people never turn their computers off. Some people turn them off at night. Any automatic scans, like anti-virus and anti-spyware scans, need to be set for times when your computer is on. In monsoon season, you will want to turn your computer off if it is storming, and unplug if easy to do. At the least, exit out of programs when you are leaving the computer, in hopes that if your computer goes off you will not lose anything.
